Sea Turtle Nesting: How You Can Help

Local Resource:

Click below for more information on local sea turtle conservation and to learn about the species, please visit the St. Johns County Sea Turtle Program page online.
Keep it Dark (Lights Out Policy)

Crucial: Artificial light disorients nesting mothers and, critically, hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean.

Please turn off or shield all lights visible from the beach by 9:00 PM. This includes closing blinds and curtains on all ocean-facing windows after dark.

Absolutely NO use of flashlights or camera flashes on the beach at night!

Keep it Flat (Clear the Beach)

All beach furniture, toys, and equipment must be removed from the beach every day by sunset. Please also fill in any large holes or flatten sandcastles before leaving—these can trap or obstruct hatchlings on their journey to the sea.

Respect the Nests

Sea turtle nests are marked with wooden stakes and caution tape by local conservation volunteers. Do not disturb these marked areas for any reason. If you spot what looks like a new, unmarked nest (large crawl tracks leading up to a disturbed mound of sand), do not approach or touch it.

Emergency Contact

If you see a sick, injured, or dead sea turtle, or a hatchling struggling in distress, do not attempt to help it yourself. Immediately call the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) 24-hour hotline: 1-888-404-3922.
